The following is a modified version of the email I sent to my mailing list on Friday, May 29th. If you want to stay up to date with all the latest info, be sure to sign up at authorloganrutherford.com/list.
This is not a drill!
Book 5 in The First Superhero series, The Power of the Supers, is coming out in July. But I’m gonna tell you how you can start reading it next Friday June 5th, if you want to. That’s something I want to stress. What I’m about to tell you is totally optional.
But I’m getting ahead of myself.
First, lets have a refresher on what the cover looks like:
Phew, just looking at that beauty gets me excited.
Alright, so what’s this whole thing about being able to read this book starting on Friday? Well, first I want to tell you about fellow author Garrett Robinson. He had a video on his YouTube channel recently where he talked about how he hasn’t been writing the next book in his fantasy series. So what he started doing was serializing his novel on Patreon, releasing a new “episode” every Friday.
Naturally, I was intrigued.
You see, the first thing I ever published nine years ago was a serialized novel called The Runners. If any of you on here read that, I will truly be shocked. Anyways, I loved reading/writing in the serialized form. It’s hard for me to wrap my head around large projects. I always have to break things up into smaller pieces. In fact, I already write The First Superhero books in a semi-serialized form in order to help me be able to tackle a whole novel without getting overwhelmed. Each novel is already separated into three parts, with each part having a pretty distinct shift/break in the story.
So serializing is something I’ve always done/loved. As you all know, I’ve had a lot of trouble writing this book. Mostly because writing a novel is really, really hard. Especially when you’re coming up on the end of a series so there’s a lot of things you have to juggle. It’s extremely daunting. Over the past few years, I’ve tried figuring out a way to serialize this novel, because I just knew if I was able to do it in small parts, it’d become much more manageable, and I’d actually be able to get this damn thing out there.
So when I saw what Garrett was doing, how well it worked for him, and the fact that we were pretty much in the exact same shoes, it was like a spotlight went off in my head (a lightbulb is too subtle for this realization.)
So, The Power of the Supers will be serialized on Patreon, starting with Episode One next Friday, June 5th. I will publish new episodes every Friday for the next 6 weeks, and once all the episodes are written and uploaded, the book will be compiled together and released on Amazon (so mid-July in this case).
I’m doing this for a few reasons, but the main one is to keep myself accountable and make sure I get this book out to you guys. And let me tell you, it’s already worked wonders. Episode One is with my editor right now, I’m almost done with the second draft of Episode Two, and I’ve already started writing the first draft of Episode Three. This book is finally coming out, and it’s all thanks to this method.
“What do I get as part of the Patreon?”
Well, for as little as $1 a month, you’ll get every episode, every week. Not just for this book, but the books that I serialize in the future (this isn’t just for this book! Going to do this for all my books going forward. There will be no content consistently for at least the rest of 2020.)
For $5 a month, you’re going to get the episodes, plus the compiled Amazon-ready version of each book before it’s even available on Amazon, plus (and this is something I’m really excited about), and exclusive podcast hosted by me and my girlfriend! Each Friday after the episode is released we’ll also be releasing an episode of the podcast where we talk about what happened in the episode, give behind-the-scenes insights, answer any questions you may have, and so much more! It’s a lot of fun and on Monday you can actually listen to Episode Zero without signing up. I actually really encourage it because we’re going to be talking all about how the Patreon is going to work and why I’m doing it, so if you have any questions or concerns, go listen to that and it should answer anything you might have.
Lastly for $10 a month you get all the previously mention benefits, plus your name written as a special thanks at the end of every episode, plus access to a monthly hangout livestream where I’ll answer any question, we’ll play games, and just have a really good time!
As we go along I’ll be listening to your feedback and adding new things to the tiers. This is going to be an evolving process!
Alright, that’s it! There’s the whole announcement. If you want to go check out the Patreon, you can go to patreon.com/loganrutherford. There’ll be more info there! If it’s something you’d be interested in, please sign-up and start reading Episode One when it releases this Friday!
Remember, this is totally optional. I’m not doing this to try and make more money, that’s why I have the $1 option there. Technically this is the cheapest way to read The Power of the Supers. If that’s all you want to do, then go for it! I added more tiers in order to give more value and because I thought it’d be fun to do, but if all you want to do is read the whole book once it’s released, you’re totally free to do so in July when it comes out on Amazon. This is just there so I actually get the book written and out on Amazon!
If you have any questions or comments, feel free to reply to this email and they’ll come straight to my inbox. There’s also Episode Zero of the podcast where Alina and I talk more about this new thing, so check that out at patreon.com/loganrutherford!
I better get going now. I gotta get Episode Two ready to send off to my editor. Lots of fun stuff is happening in Episode Four, so I’m ready to get cracking.
Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you again soon.
P.S. That link again is patreon.com/loganrutherford. Be sure to check it out later today, because I’m going to be posting Chapter One of The Power of the Supers as soon as I get to back from my editor!
